Stripe partners with OpenAI to power Instant Checkout on ChatGPT
ChatGPT will allow purchases through Stripe beginning in the US, some impressive tech. The change at the UX level will affect how we build software
Stripe blog: Stripe powers Instant Checkout in ChatGPT and releases Agentic Commerce Protocol codeveloped with OpenAI:
Orders flow from ChatGPT to a merchant’s backend via ACP. Merchants can accept or decline the order, charge the payment method, calculate and remit sales tax, and handle fulfillment and returns, as they normally would. The result is a smooth commerce experience inside ChatGPT for consumers and a new sales channel for businesses.
The implications are very interesting because of four things:
- The future is here since some years now: AI will eat everything and we’re seeing it live
- The future of UI will probably be no UI. MCPs and the likes will be how Agents, not users, will interact with our content, products, and even ideas.
- We’ve replaced human middlemen with software middlemen, we will rely on a digital salesman to show our products instead of, for example, ripoffs. As customers, we also need to trust that agents will show us the best option for our needs, instead of optimizing for conversion or revenue share.
- This integration has some serious tech behind it. ACP makes the transaction confirmed but also private from the mind of the Agent. I would not trust an agent with access to my credit card or passwords.
The ACP site is quite nice, worth a look.
